The International Tunnelling and underground space Association (ITA) and the International Road Federation workshop was held in Riyadh on 8-9 December 2009.

The workshop organising committee was chaired by H.E Eng. Abdullah Al-Mogbel, President of ITS-Arab and Deputy Minister of Transport, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The programme included the following ITS presentations:

• Benefit Evaluation Cost of ITS - Richard Harris, Chairman, IBEC
• Smart City of the Future: Global lessons for Saudi Arabia & the Middle East – Ali Abdelfattah, Director of Traffic and Transportation, Zuhair Fayez Partnership Consultants
• ATVAM Project Update – Juan Luis Barrio, General Manager, Telvent
• Systems Engineering Approach/ Project Management Assurance – Robert Jaffee, President, ConsysTec

The workshop objective was to present and discuss the state of the art concepts on roads and underground structures design in hot climate conditions using modern techniques.
